It counts with expert traumatologists specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of each joint.

Horse riding is a very complete sport. It provides numerous benefits such as improving vertical balance, strengthening muscles, reducing contracted muscles, promoting blood circulation, etc. But riders can also suffer a fall and get a shoulder, phalanges of the hand, knee or ankle fractured. Since the accident, the shoulder no longer responds normally. And over the days the problem will only increase further. The diagnosis of a trauma specialist, specialized in sports injuries is needed to confirm whether the rider has suffered a concussion. Once diagnosed, he or she will have to undergo treatment with or without surgery to cure the shoulder. It also requires a physiotherapist to recover, through training and physical work, both the musculature and the normal mobility of the shoulder.

This is one of the services offered by the new Ruber Internacional Medical Center in Paseo de la Habana. It has a trauma experts team, each specialized in a different body area. Thus, Dr. Inmaculada Gómez Arrayás treats knee and hip injuries, Dr. Pablo de la Cuadra deals with the shoulder, while Dr. Ignacio Roger de Oña focuses on hand and elbow problems. Specialists use the clinical exploration and the multiple resources that they offer in the Hospital Ruber Internacional, as imaging tests to establish an early diagnosis and to be able to start with the most appropriate treatment for each pathology. Usually you can follow two different lines of treatment. A more conservative one, intended to treat the patient using “less invasive” techniques that allow adequate recovery of their injuries with the specialized help of a physiotherapist. And a surgical one performed in the Hospital Ruber Internacional, where a surgery is performed before moving to the Rehabilitation Unit of Paseo de la Habana, directed by physiotherapist Jaime Benito, rated as one of the best in Spain.

However, there are many occasions in which the decision to opt for surgical or conservative treatment depends on many factors. For Dr. Pablo de la Cuadra, “the first thing you have to do is take precautions to avoid falling off the horse and minimize the risk of injury. There are some pathologies that do not have a 100% surgical indication. In all cases, the treatment that best suits the needs and interests of each patient is individualized. When the pathology allows it, we try to begin with the conservative treatment, where in addition to being oriented at all times by physiotherapists specialized in each injury, other treatments are also offered, such as the infiltration of planetary or growth factors. In cases refractory to conservative treatment, or when the pathology does not allow it, we offer the patient the latest technology in surgical means and techniques.”

For the diagnosis and treatment of any possible trauma, the Paseo de la Habana center enables external consultations of all specialties. It offers a radiology service, where the tests are performed at the time of the consultation, taking the results immediately. “Soon it will have a magnetic resonance team, which are currently being  preferably cited in the Hospital Ruber Internacional (it takes between 24 and 48 hours taking the results in that term) It also has a laboratory for analytical and for the completion of the process of extraction of platelet factors, podiatrist for the study of the march and templates, etc.” , adds Dr. Inmaculada Gómez.

Each articulation has its own particularities. In each sport field, hand or elbow injuries are due to traumatic, inflammatory or degenerative causes; whether they are a consequence, for example, of falling off the horse, bike or motorcycle, bad technique in training or overload. In the latter case, the fall off the horse involves more serious injuries. It is also important to keep nerve injuries in mind. Those in which, according to Dr. Ignacio Roger de Oña, nerves are compressed by positions held for long periods of time, or very demanding sports training that hypertrophy the muscles and can be extrinsic compression of the nerve. On the other hand, hip injuries in the athlete are more infrequent than those in the knee. However, “when they occur they can be important and, above all, very frustrating for the rider who wants to return as soon as possible to riding or to his usual sport”. While those in the knee (cruciate ligaments, sprains, etc.) occur in most sports. It is a complex joint that supports a lot of weight. Regarding the shoulder, “the structures that are most frequently injured in sports are the tendons and ligaments, which are those that hold and maintain the arm in their position. Athletes, for example launch, handball players and tennis players, suffer more these kinds of problems” , says Dr. Pablo de la Cuadra.

Regarding the type of treatment, when dealing with a tendon or a ligament in the shoulder that requires surgical treatment, patients are usually immobilized with a sling in the postoperative period.

The minimally invasive percutaneous techniques have been fundamental when treating hand injuries, specifically in the wrist bones. “Until recently,” explains Dr. Ignacio Roger de Oña, “a person who had a fracture of the scaphoid (small bone of the wrist) was given a cast that could be with them for up to three months. Now we do minimally invasive percutaneous fixation techniques where you put a screw in that bone through a small incision and it does not need plaster. ”

The most advanced machines to rehabilitate any joint

The team of physiotherapists of the new center have a gym equipped with cutting-edge and functional technology to achieve the rehabilitation and full recovery of the athlete. It has isoinertial systems. “Technology to prevent injuries in physical activity that increase the demand for eccentric work, a phase of muscular contraction where most muscular and tendinous breaks occur in sports,” explains Carlos Crespo, coordinator of the Rehabilitation Unit. The innovative Vertimax training system allows to work in a functional way and multiplanar strength, agility, speed or reaction.

Another of the machines available is the treadmill or anti gravity treadmill Alter G. A technology designed by NASA that allows us to run up to 80% less of our body weight.

Finally, the gym offers an innovative system of therapy of cold and compression, indicated for the recovery of injuries and post-operative called Game Ready.
